| Description |
| One of the most common forms in classical music, the Sonata is a practical outlet for composers to explore the collaborative possibilities between two musicians, giving each player an equal voice in a deep and meaningful conversation. The sparse scoring is a perfect environment for composers to work out a variety of technical concepts and musical puzzles. For its engaging chamber playing qualities and inventive structural possibilities, Mark Hetzler chose the Sonata as the sole musical genre for this recording and, following the theme of his 2002 Summit release (American Voices), focuses again on American composers: James Stephenson, John Stevens, Leonard Bernstein, and Joseph Blaha. While staying within the sonata structure, each of these four composers brings an innovative and personal approach to all aspects of the work, from form to historical influence, rhythmic design, and instrumental color and personality.
