| Along with oboist Marc Fink, this CD features Dmitri Novgorodsky, piano, and the University of Wisconsin Madison Russian Folk Orchestra conducted by Victor Gorodinsky. The works include music for oboe and piano by Boris Asafyev, Marina Dranishnikova, and German Okunev, as well as a setting of Gyorgi Svirdov's "Romance" from his Snowstorm Suite, arranged for oboe and Russian folk orchestra (balalaikas, domras, and accordions).
The other pieces on the album are settings of Russian folk songs "Broad Steppe" and "The Quail," arranged for oboe and folk orchestra by Victor Gorodinsky. The CD opens with the "Ride of the Cossacks" and closes with a cersion of Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Flight of the Bumblebee." Excellent program notes were written by Larry Earp, and funding was provided by The Graduate School. |
